Coffee is Blood
For many programmers (except
Mark Miller
-- he's mostly caffeine-free, believe it or not), coffee is probably the most consistenly-consumed beverage. For me, it's like a warm security blanket in my mouth. And, by extension, my coffeemaker is probably the kitchen appliance that I have the most dependence on. If the coffeemaker doesn't work, my whole rhythm can be thrown off.
Yesterday, my coffee maker failed me.
Until yesterday, I was the owner of a
Mr. Coffee 10-Cup Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker
. Unfortunately, it decided to take a leak all over my countertop. Only half of the coffee actually made it into the pot. So, it was like pouring out 5 cups of coffee all over my kitchen. Needless to say, I was pretty hacked off. And, worse than that, I had far too little coffee to have a productive day of coding!
I toughed it out until my trophy wife got home. She sympathized and recommended that we head over to Kohls to purchase a new coffeemaker. We decided that, because of my obvious chemical dependency, we should go ahead and drop the $200 to get the
Bunn BTX 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer
. After all, it's a business expense, right? This morning, I got my first 3-minute pot of quality coffee and I'm not disappointed. But, I'm wondering if I can claim this thing on my taxes.
It's all about me

Despite the lack of response I am sure that many developers can feel your pain. My level of productivity is linked; at least in part; by the accessibility of quality coffee. Personally, I prefer the Bodum, which speaks to a number of my nerd’ier science geek tendencies (http://www.bodumusa.com/shop/line.asp?MD=1&GID=52&LID=280&CHK=&SLT=&mscssid=Q3892UV57U7Q9PX2V9N9HVHKGVTJ27C2). As for the tax question… If you have a business license then I would say yes. Beyond that, I am not sure the IRS would recognize this as a valid un-reimbursed business expense on a personal tax return. Heck, If they did, I probably have a couple grand in Starbucks receipts to claim. Lets us know if you get a final answer on this…

Bunns are soooooo much better than lousy Mr. Coffee type brewers which don't heat up water anywhere near hot enough for good coffee. Another serious geek coffee machine is the Technivorm which you can find at Sweet Maria's Coffee: http://sweetmarias.com/prod.technivorm.shtml.
I use a low-tech approach with a simple pour-over cone (http://sweetmarias.com/prod.brewers.shtml#filtercones) that lets me get water right at the temp I want it, plus they're cheap. (But what I really lust after is one of these: http://coffeetea.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=coffeetea&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.royalcoffeemaker.com)
